Afterbirth Pains

These spasmodic pains occur immediately after childbirth and during the next few days. Uterine contractions are experienced the strongest while nursing the baby. Their function is to prevent hemorrhage by constricting the capillaries in the uterine wall where the placenta was recently attached. The cramps serve a necessary and useful purpose, but may sometimes cause severe discomfort.
